I help leadership teams build a simple breathing practice they can actually keep — one that fits into a normal working day and doesn't need an app, a cushion or a spare half hour. The science behind it is well established, and the results show up in how people lead.

What changes
These are leadership behaviors rather than wellbeing outcomes. Every one of them comes back to the same thing: a physical state you can learn to steady. And for every one, there is a number we can put against it at thirty days.
Being reactive is a physical state before it is a behavior, and it is the first thing to go when someone is carrying a lot. When a leader can steady themselves, they can listen without getting defensive, and they can take the half-second pause that makes a hard conversation go differently.

The quickest way to lose a room is to run a good session and then produce nothing afterwards. So I build you a report from the anonymous surveys and feedback taken at the retreat itself. Then, thirty days later, I follow up with every participant on a private call — to answer their questions, help them fit the practice into a normal working day, and make sure they are getting the results they came for.

The case
This is the finding that tends to stop a leadership team in the room, because it inverts what everyone assumes. In Gallup's global data, leaders report meaningfully more stress, more anger, more sadness and more loneliness than the people who report to them — and are less likely to have laughed that day.
Which would be a private matter, except that it does not stay private.

In a study tracking 88 supervisors across ten working days, 57% of the variation in how harshly a manager treated their team was variation within the same manager — the same person, better on some days than others. Poor sleep predicted the bad days. And how the manager behaved predicted their unit's work engagement, accounting for around 30% of the variance in it.

A separate study followed 101 supervisor–employee pairs across a working week. When a leader slept badly, they behaved more harshly the next day — and their employees then slept badly too. The loop closes. This is the mechanism by which one unregulated nervous system becomes an organizational cost, and it is the reason this work starts at the top of the structure rather than the bottom.

Mechanism
This is respiratory and cardiovascular physiology, and it has been in the textbooks for decades. What is newer is that we now know it can be trained on purpose, and that most adults are running on a poor default without ever realizing it.

Heart rate rises slightly on the inhale and falls on the exhale — respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Lengthening the exhale relative to the inhale increases parasympathetic tone. This is why a long exhale settles you and rapid shallow breathing does not.
At roughly five to six breaths per minute, breathing rhythm and the baroreflex — the blood pressure control loop — fall into phase, and heart rate variability peaks. It is a mechanical resonance, not a belief, and it is why this specific cadence keeps recurring in the literature.
Carbon dioxide is what lets haemoglobin release oxygen into tissue, and it is the primary driver of the urge to breathe. Chronic light overbreathing lowers CO2 tolerance, so ordinary pressure starts to register as air hunger. Tolerance is trainable.
The one that lands hardest in a room of executives
Most people hold their breath at a screen without noticing. The CO2 climbs, the body reads it as a genuine alarm, and it arrives in consciousness as unexplained afternoon dread.
There is a real mechanism behind this. A 2013 study found that patients with complete bilateral amygdala damage — including a woman who had reported no fear of anything for thirty years — had full panic attacks when they inhaled CO2. Fear was not required. Blood chemistry was sufficient.
That reframes a great deal of what gets called stress. Some of it is not appraisal of your circumstances at all — it is a chemoreceptive alarm responding to how you have been breathing for the last four hours.

Sixty seconds — do it now
This is coherent breathing — five and a half seconds in, five and a half out. It is the most studied pattern in the field, and it is the one your team would leave holding.
Follow the trace. Nose if you can, quiet, low into the belly. Most people feel something inside four or five cycles — not relaxation in the vague sense, but the baroreflex bringing heart rate and breath into phase, which shows up on any HRV monitor as an immediate, visible change.
Nobody watching would know you were doing it, which is rather the point. The practice an executive will actually use before a board meeting is the one nobody can see.
Method
Most breathwork fails inside companies because a room gets one big experience and then no idea what to do on Tuesday morning. I teach three separate practices and attach each one to the moment it is actually for.
Focuses on nasal, diaphragmatic, light, slow and deep breathing, and on improving your CO2 tolerance. That matters most during sleep, when breathing problems usually go unnoticed.
The practice we shared further up this page. Roughly 5.5 seconds in, 5.5 seconds out. Deliberate, portable, and completely invisible to anyone watching, which is precisely why an executive will actually use it. No cushion, no app, no closed eyes.
This practice replicates life. It overwhelms and stimulates through quick breathing that loads the system, then guides you back down into a calm, balanced state. It is a journey the room tends to remember — not the science of it, but how it felt.
One is how you breathe when you are not thinking about it. One is what you do ninety seconds before you speak. One is what you can only do with a facilitator and a floor.
Most of the corporate work uses only the first two. They are gentle, they suit almost everyone, and they are where the strongest evidence sits. The third one is powerful and it is usually what people remember, which is why I run it at a retreat with a floor and a screening form rather than slotting it into an afternoon agenda.

The program
My in-person session format is purpose-built for a leadership offsite: 90 minutes, 8–25 people, a short evidence frame, a measured live demonstration, and one protocol the team leaves holding. I connect with each participant before and after so the room watches its own numbers move, and everyone leaves with a one-page protocol card.
Executives run in a near-constant state of high alert. Deadlines, decisions and pressure keep the nervous system locked in fight-or-flight, and over time that drains focus, patience and performance — and pushes people towards burnout. What I teach is a practical, science-backed way to regulate that response on demand, using nothing but the breath.
There are two halves to it. A simple daily practice that rebalances the nervous system, and a guided experience of what that regulation actually feels like, so people know what they are working towards.
Part 01 · The foundation
Before anything else I teach people how to breathe well in ordinary life. Most of us default to shallow, fast, mouth-based breathing without ever noticing, which keeps the body mildly stressed even when nothing is wrong. The fix is functional breath: nasal, diaphragmatic, light, slow and deep. It becomes the pattern people carry into meetings, commutes and downtime, not just into a formal practice.
Part 02 · The daily practice
On top of that sits a specific technique with good science behind it: a 5.5-second inhale paired with a 5.5-second exhale, held for 5.5 minutes a day. That pacing brings heart rate variability into a coherent rhythm and helps balance the autonomic nervous system. It is short enough to fit into any day, and it is the daily repetition that lets it compound and genuinely change how someone responds to pressure.
Part 03 · The experience
The second half is a guided 45-minute session built to mirror the arc of a high-stress day. It deliberately moves people through the same activation and pressure they feel at work, then walks them back down through calm, into peace, and finally into balance. The point is not relaxation. It is giving people a felt reference point for what leaving fight-or-flight is actually like, so the daily practice has something concrete to aim at.
Framed for a corporate audience this is not a wellness add-on, it is a resilience tool. Executives who can reliably bring their nervous system back to baseline are less likely to get stuck in chronic stress, better able to think clearly under pressure, and less prone to the burnout that erodes both performance and retention. A few minutes a day, reinforced by a deeper session now and then, changes how leaders function under load.
There is a simple loop behind it. Participants complete a survey at the start, and I check in again thirty days later on a private call. That follow-up looks at whether people have actually kept up the daily practice, whether they notice a real shift in how they handle stress, and what they think it has done for their productivity. It turns the program from an anecdote into a before-and-after you can share back with the organization.

Facilitator
I am not a management consultant and I have never pretended to be one. I have spent fifteen years on a single subject: how people breathe, and what changes when they learn to do it on purpose.
I came to it the hard way. A serious car accident in 2001 left me rebuilding a body that no longer worked the way it used to. What started as rehabilitation turned into years of study across breath, movement and the nervous system, and eventually into this practice.
In a room of executives I am the outside specialist, and I think that is the right role. I am not there to have an opinion on your strategy. I am there to teach a physical skill properly, to a standard, to people who are used to being very good at things.
